For as much as was made of the Tigers having a dominant edge in pitching, the A’s rookie starters have been as close to Justin Verlander and Doug Fister as anyone could expect. Yesterday’s A’s starter, Jarrod Parker, went 6 1/3 innings and gave up just two earned runs with five strikeouts. Verlander clearly was better, but not by a wide enough margin that had some wondering whether the Tigers might sweep the series.
The A’s have made a few errors and haven’t been able to cash in on a couple of opportunities. The Tigers, though, haven’t stung the ball and taken clear advantage of the A’s pitching. Tommy Milone has matched Fister almost pitch for pitch today, as shown by the tie score in the top of the seventh.
