Tigers clinging to 2-0 lead after five

Max Scherzer’s pitch count was in great shape after four innings and he looked like a bona fide ace. He retired 12 straight batters before a two-out walk to Seth Smith and a bloop single to Derek Norris in the fifth inning.

Scherzer got out of the inning unscathed by getting Cliff Pennington to become his eighth strikeout of the night.

It’s a bummer Scherzer threw so many pitches in the fifth. He was looking like he could throw a complete game before laboring through that inning.
