Verlander, Tigers look to push Yankees to the brink

You couldn’t have drawn it up any better for the Tigers entering tonight’s Game 3 of the ALCS. They’re up 2-0 in the series, and Justin Verlander hasn’t even pitched yet.

That changes tonight.

Baseball’s best pitcher takes the mound against baseball’s most storied franchise and he is looking to put his team on the cusp of getting back to the World Series.

Verlander gave up a solo home run to Coco Crisp in the first inning of the first game of these playoffs. He’s given up nothing since. His dominance in Game 5 of the ALDS against Oakland is something legends are made of.

But the Yankees are the Yankees, and they aren’t scared.

They counter on the mound with Phil Hughes, who pitched a complete game at Comerica Park on June 3 in a Yankees win. But you get the feeling that if the Tigers can push across two or three runs, with the way Verlander has been pitching this postseason, that it could be enough.

Game time is 8:00 on TBS.
