Artezin Zinfandel Mendocino County 2010, $16-$18: Artezin – think the art of Zinfandel – was created when the Hess Collection in Napa decided to add a Zinfandel to its line in 2005. The grapes are sourced from the super ZIP codes for Zins, being Mendocino and Amador counties and Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. The latest release marches out spicy, in-your-face fruit, braced with flavors of boysenberries, raspberries and black pepper with touches of clove and nutmeg. The punch of flavor and depth of color get help from added Petite Sirah and Carignan. The yummy creaminess on the midpalate calls for a food pairing like thick lamb chops, sirloin steak with a little fat, or better yet, a pizza with the works. It’s easy to find at Meijer, Busch’s and independent retailers like Holiday Market in Royal Oak and Wine Palace in Livonia.
