Windmill Old Vine Zinfandel Lodi 2010, $12-$14: It’s not often you find an old vine California Zinfandel at this price. But the Phillips family has farmed this land long enough for lots of things, including vines, to be old. The sixth generation is running the winery at the 160-acre homestead in Lodi that dates to the 1860s. The wine is spicy, packed with dark berry fruit, black plums, dark licorice and a hint of vanilla. The Phillips produce a number of labels, all with quirky names, including 7 Deadly Zins and Earthquake. Among the stores that carry Windmill: Randazzo, Clinton Twp.; Merchant’s Fine Wine, Dearborn; Cose di Lusso, Rochester; Cost Plus, Eastern Market, Detroit.
