Clif Family “The Climber” Sauvignon Blanc California 2011, $14: Clif Family Winery owners Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford make a serious Sauvignon Blanc, sustainably grown, off vineyards in Potter Valley in Mendocino County and the Lodi district. A long, cool fermentation and six months on the lees pack this baby with flavor. It’s stylish. Aromas are grapefruit, sweet orange, and melon. Flavors have a swirl of herbs amid the tropical tones of citrus, melon and pineapple. It’s crisp and dry, but not austere. There’s a lot of action in the finish — the sign of a well-made wine. Pour it as an aperitif or with seafood or chicken. Producers of this wine also own Clif Bar & Co. — you know, the health bars. And they climb mountains.
