Glen Carlou: Chardonnay to gush about

Glen Carlou Chardonnay Paarl Valley South Africa 2011, $17: This Chardonnay makes you smile. It’s so distinctive — with its apple/pear/tropical notes threaded with minerality and spicy oak. It’s truly the minerality that sets it apart, and its freshness. It has lots of lime, goosebery and stone fruit flavors to add to the complexity, and it has nice body — 13.5 percent alcohol. Donald Hess of Hess Collection bought this winery in 2003. Catch this video on YouTube to hear Hess discuss his wineries on four continents. It’s an 11-minute treat.
