Weekend Wine: Chateau St. Jean Signature Red

Chateau St. Jean Signature Red California 2010, $14

Everybody’s doing it: a red blend with a proprietary name, in this case just “Signature Red,” which certainly puts your reputation on the line for a $14 wine. This baby does not disappoint, and it isn’t sweet. The nose erupts with black currants, spice, strawberry and cherry notes, dark chocolate and ripe plums. It’s a symphony of flavors in the mouth, with lovely supple tannins, acidity for balance, nice integration of oak and bold fruit flavors. It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Malbec from key sites throughout California. It meets the high bar set by Chateau St. Jean – at a tremendously affordable price. It’s delicious! This wine hit Metro Detroit wine shelves a month ago.
