Jancis Robinson praises Michigan's "Lot 49" Riesling by Chateau Grand Traverse

Giving a nice nod to dry Rieslings from Michigan, British wine authority Jancis Robinson appeared on “CBS This Morning” today to tout her new book, “American Wine: The Ultimate Companion to the Wines and Wineries of the United States,” which she co-authored with Linda Murphy.

She made the point that wine is made in all 50 states, and when asked by Gayle King to single out the best, she declined to name just one but waved to the lineup of bottles in front of her, which included the award-winning Lot 49 Michigan Riesling from Chateau Grand Traverse, Gruet Brut from New Mexico, and wines from Virginia and New York.

Robinson made of point of praising the dry Rieslings from Michigan and New York.

Earlier this month, the International Riesling Federation also shined a light on these two wine regions with the announcement that “Riesling wines from Michigan barely edged out those from New York at the recent International Eastern Wine Competition and Riesling Challenge sponsored by Vineyard & Winery Management magazine held in Sonoma, CA. ”

“Barely edged out?” True, but perhaps that phrasing was penned by a New York scribe!

Here’s the rest of the email: “Each State received a total of 9 top awards (Best of Class, Double Gold and Gold), but Michigan’s CAB Cellars/Laurentide Winery 2011 Riesling from the Leelanau Peninsula not only won the Riesling Challenge but also Best of Show White Wine of the entire competition … . Michigan and New York each had one Best of Class winner; Michigan had 3 Double Golds to New York’s 2; and New York had 6 Golds to Michigan’s 5.”

Here’s how Michigan and New York fared in the Riesling/White Wine categories at the International Eastern Wine Competition as posted on the International Riesling Federation Web site:
