McManis Family Vineyards offers well-made, affordable selections from their own viticultural area in the interior of Northern California. The wines are easy to find in Metro Detroit, including at Merchant’s Fine Wine in Dearborn.

Ron and Jamie McManis founded their winery in 1990 and were granted a River Junction (California) AVA (American Viticultural Area) in 2001 for their large vineyard just west of the city of Ripon, at the junction of the Stanislaus and San Joaquin rivers — hence the name of the AVA.

McManis Family Vineyards Viognier River Junction (California) 2013, $11

The Viognier will give your palate a fine introduction to the work of the McManis family, who are committed to sustainable growing practices. The aromas are citrus, floral, followed by flavors that give the immediate impression of sweetness but finish dry — grated orange rind, lime and honeysuckle notes are married with dry herbal, minerally traits. It’s stainless-steel fermented to retain the fresh fruit flavors. It’s yummy.

McManis Chardonnay River Junction California 2013, $10

This Chardonnay has a floral, citrus, white stone fruit personality with a silky mouthfeel and dry, herbal finish. It is 100 percent fermented in stainless steel, so you are getting the full freshness of the fruit without any wood overtones.

McManis Pinot Grigio California 2013, $10

It’s charmingly dry and crisp, with lovely flavors in the midpalate — a jolt of lime, herbs and minerality with tropical melon and stone fruit in the finish.
