Thursday wine notes: Banfi's San Angelo Pinot Grigio, Tasting at Plum Market

CB_San_Angelo_Pinot_Grigio1-129x450[1]SAN ANGELO Pinot Grigio belongs to Castello Banfi’s estate-bottled, single-vineyard range of wines. And while every wine lover associates Sangiovese with the famous Tuscan town of Montalcino, the team at Banfi rolled the dice in 1982 and planted the normally cool-climate grape Pinot Grigio on several estate vineyards in the southern hills and it’s been a hit ever since.

Castello Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio Toscana IGT 2013, $19: Lush, ripe, juicy fruit and fresh acidity form the core of this easy-drinking Pinot Grigio from estate vineyards in the renowned Tuscan wine town of Montalcino where complex reds from Sangiovese rule. Banfi admits their rich, lush Grigio is totally different in style from the crisp, austere wines that are famously grown in cool areas like Friuli and Alto Adige but their sales success and high scores with this Tuscan white validate what must have been an experiment — which launched back in 1982! Surprise and satisfy your dinner guests by handing them a glass of San Angelo.
