This is unorthodox, and probably a bit dumb. But I’m doing it anyway. I’m going to tie together the two biggest sports stories in America, if “America” is loosely defined as “New York and Detroit.”
Tim Tebow arrived in New York as the Jets’ new backup quarterback with much fanfare and much skepticism.
Brandon Inge is in Lakeland attempting to win the Tigers’ second-base job with much fanfare and much skepticism.
Bear with me on this. I’m being only mildly sarcastic.
Tebow and Inge are considered good guys, which buys them some backing. Both are overhyped based on actual diminished production. Both are polarizing, and generate way more passionate discussion than their positions warrant. Both are viewed as potential distractions, although there’s no evidence of it yet.
And both should be judged on merit, not on name or acclaim. Tebow cannot be the Jets’ starting quarterback. That’s not an endorsement of Mark Sanchez; it’s an indictment of Tebow, who’s an interesting little gimmick. And no, he wasn’t responsible for the Broncos’ playoff run last year. Heck, Denver’s defense was so good, Peyton Manning chose to go there.
And I highly doubt Inge can be an everyday player for the Tigers, or even an every-other-day player. His spring batting average is down to .159, and while spring numbers can be deceiving, this looks suspiciously confirming after his .197 a year ago.
Inge could be done after 11 years as a Tiger, and no one should be surprised if he is. Danny Worth provides more versatility and a better bat.
Of course, every time someone says Tebow is done, it turns out he isn’t. Every time someone says Inge is done, it turns out he isn’t. Except, possibly, this time.
